SUMMARY:Music from the Old and New World
DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy an evening of uplifting choral music from the Italian Baroque of Vivaldi’s Gloria to Rutter’s Feel the Spirit\, based on spirituals of America’s Deep South. With guest soloists Andrew Ashwin\, Lindsey Ashwin and Karen Wilson-deRoze\, and organ accompanist Robert Foreman. \nFull Programme: \n\nVivaldi – Gloria in D RV589\nRutter – Feel the Spirit: a cycle of spirituals for mezzo-soprano and mixed choir\nBrahms – Ich wandte mich\, und sahe an (I turned\, and looked upon all) and O Tod\, wie bitter bist du (O death\, how bitter you are) from Vier enste Gesänge (Four Serious Songs) Op. 121 for Bass soloist: Andrew Ashwin\, baritone; Vor der Tür (Outside the door) and Es rauschet das Wasser (The water rushes) from Vier Duette (Four Duets) Op. 28 for alto and baritone soloists: Karen Wilson-deRoze\, soprano\, Andrew Ashwin\, baritone; Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit (You now have sorrow) from Ein Deutsches Requiem Op. 45: Karen Wilson-deRoze\, soprano\n\n  \n  \nComments from the audience: \n~ “I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The programme offered something for everyone as always\, and there was a very warm community atmosphere in the audience (I heard several people commenting on that and I agree).” \n~ “I particularly enjoyed the New World Spirituals: the soloist\, the choir and the accompanist performed as one and well deserved the very enthusiastic audience response.” \n~ “The faces of many in the choir were tense in the Gloria and constantly looking down at their score. It must have been very hard for the conductor to hold them together.” \n~ “The Spirituals were a triumph. Choir singing their hearts out; the mezzo’s voice so suitable for the songs and she was really at ease and involved. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.” \n~ “We both thoroughly enjoyed the whole concert. As German speakers\, we were particularly impressed with the soloists’ pronunciation in the Brahms songs – we could hear every word! There was a real ‘feel good’ atmosphere.” \nFrom a choir member: \n~ “After a gap of over twenty-five years. a series of life-changing events two years ago provided the catalyst for my return to choral singing. On Friday evening I was once again transported\, and was totally absorbed this time in the music of Vivaldi and Rutter. I feel my life has been enhanced by the knowledge I have gained from the past weeks’ rehearsals. I feel fulfilled to have learned these new works and to have had the opportunity to perform them; rewarded to see the delight on the faces of the audience and to hear such positive comments from them; uplifted and joyous as I left the church with such a sense of well-being. Thank you LDCS!” \n

SUMMARY:Orpheus in the Underworld
DESCRIPTION:Semi-staged comic operetta by Jacques Offenbach. \n*** Comments from choir members: \n~  …. It was great fun performing on the night when it all came together …. How nice to do something different which included so much variety including a bit of acting …. The picnic and quiz are ongoing favourites too …. \n~  …. I like challenges and this measured up as a big one …. it was the most difficult one I have performed ….…. The pace was fast and there were a lot of words to fit in but the more I practised the easier it felt (funny that!) …. \n~  …. It made a change to do something different\, but feel we needed a little more time to learn it. Everyone did their best\, of that I am sure …. It was a bold move for this piece to be selected\, because of its complexity and reduced number of singers …. \n~  …. Alan asked for solo volunteers for the minor parts …. a bit high for an alto …. but I eventually gave in …. I soon realized that it was not my singing ability that got me the part but my ability to look ridiculous without moaning (a 75-year-old wearing feather wings\, I ask you!) …. \n~  …. I am looking forward to a lighter summer concert in 2020\, where we can make the audience smile\, laugh and participate a bit more …. As it turned out the show was great fun and all credit to the “hamming it up” by the major characters …. The summer concert is a chance for the choir to let its hair down and a joyful celebration at the end of a busy choral year. \n

SUMMARY:Holy Week
DESCRIPTION:“An Easter Oratorio” by Christopher Wood. \nLCDS once again leads the way in bringing new choral works to the county. Wood’s four part oratorio portrays the key moments of the week before Easter Sunday\, from Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem\, the last supper\, the final hours on the cross and the glory of the resurrection. \n  \n*** Comments from the audience: \n~ It’s always a joy to hear Lutterworth and District Choral Society perform in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s church … \n~ The concert was a triumph. Great new music and a stunning performance. We came away uplifted. Thank you so much … \n~ Christopher Wood is a surgeon and pharmaceutical entrepreneur turned composer who gives generous support to choral societies who introduce his work to music lovers. Having previously performed his “Requiem”\,  LDCS gave the first performance in the area (and second nationally) of his new work\, “Holy Week” … \n~ In matching their sound to the mood of each section\, LDCS skilfully navigated the nuances of this unfamiliar piece … \n~ Part three was especially dramatic\, with clearly enunciated short phrases describing the crucifixion and leading to a thoughtful silence … \n~ Credit must go to musical director Alan Barraclough\, who brought all together with care … \n~ This new Easter oratorio was a rare and real treat for the audience. \n  \nComments from associate choir members: \n~ We felt the style of music combined with the church setting created an ambience that was perfect for the work … We were privileged to listen to such high quality and accomplished soloists who were very ably accompanied by the choir … The presence of the composer of the work in the choir was an added bonus. \n  \nFrom the composer: \n~ Thank you for the wonderful performance of Holy Week. I have been enjoying the afterglow of the whole performance for the past week. It was magnificent. I hope the choir enjoyed it too. Thank you for allowing me to sing with the choir. I don’t normally have that pleasure! \nAnd finally: \n~ Many hands making light work ….. staging loaded! \n \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Requiem by Christopher Wood
DESCRIPTION:This concert was a unique and exciting choral event in the history of Lutterworth and District Choral Society. In 2015\, the choir was invited to take part in a choral training project which was launched across the country to selected choirs. The aim of the project was for a new work\, Requiem by Christopher Wood\, to be learned and shared culminating with a performance at the Royal Albert Hall. The workshop was held in 2016 at St Mary’s Church\, Lutterworth with the composer in attendance. The choir members enjoyed this experience so much that it was decided to add the ‘Wood Requiem’ to their concert repertoire for 2017. The concert also included the choral suite from The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins. \nChristopher Wood wrote the Requiem in 2002 when he was struck by images of the funeral of the Queen Mother and the number of people who queued for hours to pay their respects. Wood thought\, “If those people were a choir\, what would they sing? What would capture that mix of emotions?” Wood\, a former cancer surgeon who now develops cancer drugs\, had never composed a note of music\, but music had always been a vital part of his life. It took him about eight years to write the Requiem and a further two years for the orchestration. The first live performance took place at St John’s Smith Square on 12 December 2012. With the composer’s support\, L&DCS gave the first ever public performance in the local area and members are looking forward to joining with choirs from around the country for a large-scale performance in the Royal Albert Hall sometime in the near future. \nComments from the composer and the choir members following the performance: \nIt was a wonderful performance of the Requiem and an evening to remember. The singing was superb. You must have been very proud of the choir. I think the audience thoroughly enjoyed the whole event too; a lot of happy people and it’s always so rewarding when you know the audience had a good time. They will be back for more. \nSo\, many thanks for singing the Requiem. It always gives me enormous pleasure to hear it performed. \n \n– Christopher Wood\, 2nd December 2017 \nAfter struggling in rehearsal\, something finally clicked about two weeks before the performance. I thoroughly enjoyed singing the Requiem last Saturday. Chris Wood very kindly gave the altos some lovely tuneful lines. On talking to him after the concert he seemed sincerely happy with how we had performed and is hoping to put on a Midlands event. It would be lovely to sing it again. \nOnly to have been part of this performance can you understand the sheer excitement and joy of being part of a choir. The drama of the last rehearsal was followed by a triumphant evening rendition\, when we all sang our hearts out. I brought home a signed copy of Requiem\, a memento I will always treasure. \nGetting to grips with the Wood Requiem was hard work. It was more or less unknown to most of us but as I got to know it I realised it was rather a lovely work. On the night of the concert everything came together and it was an absolute delight to perform – truly uplifting. Perhaps having Christopher Wood present spurred us on. Whatever the reason\, the choir exceeded all expectations. The performance as a whole was electrifying. I would sing it again in a heartbeat. Wow! What a success! \nThe concert was a wonderful and unique occasion. I’m so glad I was able to take part and meet the composer. \nWith my limited knowledge of written music\, I joined the choir seven years ago with some trepidation. Little did I know that I could eventually sing to the high standard of the ‘Wood Requiem’ and relax and enjoy it. Thank you to Lutterworth Choral Society for the friendly and encouraging way they have helped me to such such beautiful music. It is indeed ‘a joyous thing.’ \nI wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed being part of the L&DCS for the last few months and thank you for making us so welcome. We loved singing the ‘Wood Requiem’ and The Armed Man culminating in Saturday’s concert. \nIt was very exhilarating and hugely exciting to be part of such a wonderful evening and a huge privilege to have the composer with us. \nAfter the final ‘Libera Me’ with the full choir and soloists\, the audience reaction was amazing. The sea of smiling faces in front of us left no doubt as to their enjoyment. I felt privileged to be part of such an uplifting experience. \nA most enjoyable challenge with a very rewarding result. A beautiful sound. \nFrom HIGHNOTES\, Summer 2018: \nLutterworth and District Choral Society recently performed Christopher Wood’s Requiem\, a work inspired by the crowds that gathered to mourn the Queen Mother in 2002. Having attended a workshop on the piece in 2016 highlighted by Making Music\, events came full circle when the group had the chance to perform the work in full with the composer in attendance. You can next see the choir singing Christopher’s new Easter work in April 2019. \n \nAlan and Lorna with Christopher Wood \n \nMusical Director – Alan Barraclough

SUMMARY:The Creation
DESCRIPTION:A packed church heard a performance of almost all the music from Haydn’s celebrated oratorio\, The Creation and applauded with enthusiasm and great warmth at the interval; even more so at the end. \nOn this occasion about 40 members of the Bardi Symphony Orchestra accompanied the performance. Secco recitatives were accompanied by keyboard and the various solo parts were shared between four singers. Taken as a whole this was an ambitious undertaking and members of the audience were rewarded with an enthusiastic performance which had some moments that made a powerful impact. \nThe quality of tone produced by the choir was very pleasing and consistent\, though there were occasions when the approach to high notes was inclined to be fearful rather than confident. Dynamic control was less proficient and the scope for contrasts was often underexploited. \nHowever\, the start was sung with both assurance and finesse. The pianissimo was self-controlled\, the lightness required for the staccato phrases was managed superbly with not a hint of what was about to happen. Then came a glorious fortissimo burst on the word light. Four crotchet beats of the most excellent powerful sound – very loud but not at all forced. Spine tingling stuff! \nIn such a challenging work\, it isn’t surprising that there were some insecure moments. The orchestral cohesion at the beginning of the Representation of Chaos was very tentative and at the other end of the evening\, the final chorus\, Sing the Lord was also lacking in confidence for the first sections of fugal writing. \nThe tragedy of the evening was the unfortunate failure of Derek Nurse’s voice. He used much skill and expertise to honour his responsibility to Haydn but at the interval he withdrew from further solo singing. Ellie Stell was a neat and nimble Gabriel while Andrew Ashwin was a most impressive Raphael in parts 1 and 2 and then Adam in part 3. The relish which imbued his singing was palpably exciting. Karen Wilson-de-Roze was Adam’s partner Eve in part 3. Eve’s part is small but the technical and expressive demands were handled with stylish control. \nAlan Barraclough’s direction of the performance was calm and controlled with aptly chosen tempi for the rather dry acoustic in the packed church. \nIt gives me great delight to see Lutterworth and District Choral Society maintain its numerous body of singers and I look forward to their continuing success in the diverse programme of concerts they undertake. If every member of the chorus were to glance up at the conductor more often – especially at the beginnings and ends of phrases\, sections and numbers – I feel that their overall cohesion of sound would increase from its already good level. There were occasions when articulation was less than absolutely clear and there needs to be a strategy developed for sustained sounds. But let’s not forget what I said about light! The overall impression of the evening was that performers and audience alike were well pleased – and so they should have been. \n– WV Tomkins \n20 November 2016
